The procedure of post-project monitoring of environmental impact assessment takes place after the completion of an extraction project and allows you to monitor how business activities affect the environment. This is especially true for businesses that may have a negative impact on the environment.
The concept of "post-project monitoring" (abbreviated as "PPM") covers the system of future monitoring studies that are mandatory for the business entity, if it is provided for by a positive Environmental Impact Assessment Conclusion.
The implementation of the PPM after the environmental impact assessment procedure enables the subsoil user to anticipate and take into account the negative effects of the planned activity that were not analysed in the EIA Report, as well as to develop all necessary recommendations for their elimination or reduction to an environmentally acceptable level.
Provision of information by the customer for the PPM procedure. Defining monitoring goals and objectives: monitoring can have different goals, such as assessing the environmental impact of activities, identifying possible problems and solving them, improving resource efficiency, etc.
Analysis of the information received, including the EIA Conclusion, and development of an appropriate post-project monitoring plan and programme, taking into account the specifics of the planned activities at the site. Determination of monitoring methods: monitoring methods may include visual inspections, air, water and soil quality measurements, biological and geochemical studies, local community surveys, etc. Monitoring methods should be selected depending on the monitoring goals and objectives.
Conducting mandatory monitoring studies, the results of which are used in the development of the PPM.
Submission of the Report to the authorised bodies - territorial or central.
Development of a set of preventive measures and actions that will help to localise and minimise possible negative impacts on the environment or human health during the planned activities that were not taken into account during the development of the EIA Report.
monitoring of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere;
monitoring of discharges to surface and groundwater;
monitoring of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of soil conditions;
monitoring of physical factors of negative impact on the environment;
monitoring of the impact on biodiversity and on the territories belonging to the Nature Reserve Fund, the Emerald Network and the Ecological Network.
The PPM in Ukraine is regulated by Article 13 of the Law of Ukraine 2059-VIII of 23.05.2017 "On Environmental Impact Assessment".

Post-project EIA monitoring: how can we help?
If you need to carry out the planned activities in accordance with the EIA Conclusion in terms of post-project monitoring of the planned activities, the specialists of Geological Investment Group LLC will be able to help you with this.
Geological Investment Group LLC carries out post-project monitoring of the environmental impact assessment in the field of subsoil use, as well as objects related to the extractive industry in accordance with the current environmental legislation.
The price of post-project monitoring is determined individually for each facility, taking into account the results of the facility analysis, the scope of work and the obligation to perform post-project monitoring, which is set out in the EIA Conclusion by the authorised body.
The timing of post-project monitoring is directly related to the specifics of the company's operations, working methods and annual productivity in relation to mineral deposits. Usually, these timelines can be foreseen when writing an environmental impact assessment report.
Given the changes in geological and environmental laws, it is extremely important to comply with the conditions and submit reports to the relevant authorities in a timely manner.
In addition, the specialists of the Geological Investment Group carry out pre-project monitoring of sites, deposits and areas, which can be carried out on the investor's request to avoid possible risks of rejection when submitting the subsoil plot documentation for auction and when the auction documentation is reviewed by a potential buyer.
Given the risk that may arise after the geological study of the subsoil use object, the pre-project monitoring stage is an important component before the EIA procedure.
Pre-project monitoring will provide a general overview of all environmental restrictions and prohibitions on the territory and in the area of influence of the planned activities.
